Richard H. Dinkins, former Tennessee Court of Appeals judge and long-time civil rights supporter, has undoubtedly left a lasting mark in Nashville and Tennessee history. Discover more about Judge Richard Dinkins’ remarkable leadership journey.
Judge Richard Dinkins has been a leader in and out of the courtroom in Nashville for the better part of five decades. He was at ease with all audiences, and his measured and wise counsel was frequently sought by his colleagues, who noted his compassion and wisdom permeated everything he did. That made him an impactful leader on issues of civil rights – leading on equitable access to education – and a worthy nominee to the Tennessee Court of Appeals Middle Section. When Governor Phil Bredesen appointed Judge Dinkins to the seat, he became the first black member of the Tennessee Court of Appeals. His impact on Nashville’s public schools is profound and earned him entry into the NPEF Hall of Fame. Judge Dinkins left Nashville a better place than he found it, and for that, he has my eternal gratitude. My thoughts are with his three children as they grieve.
